dejavoodoo44 When it's done well, afrobeat is a magnificent music form. This is done very well. Most of Fela's classic formula is there. The layered percussion. The guitar that's just there to add rhythm. The meandering bass. And most importantly, the majestic and almost symphonic brass arrangements. Great album.

about

From Artist

I found peace in my heart to share this album with you. I come with love, peace and harmony. Listening to the masters, Fela Kuti, Orlando Julius, Dr Victor Olaiya and many others, have inspired me on this journey.

It all started in 2013 I was hanging out at Dotsol Studios in Lagos, Nigeria, jamming with friends. Two tracks were recorded that day, one of them being, Ejé K'ajó. This was one of my first compositions and I am very proud that it's made it on this album.

2014 was a big year. I moved on from Egypt 80 after 14 years to start my own project in Melbourne, Australia. I began collaborating with musicians and composing music. Eventually my band was ready and Alárìíyá was born.

Fast forward 2 years and I was back at Dotsol Studios, recording the remainder of the album with Olusola Bankole. In addition to his wonderful musicianship, Olusola worked tirelessly throughout the recording process, despite our challenges (power outs, fuel scarcity, etc).

The extra vocals & horns on this album were recorded and mixed at Radiate Productions by Bisho Abdelsayed in Melbourne, Australia.

Dedication
This album is dedicated to my family OKUNADE.
You can become whatever you desire, no matter where you're born, your background or what people think about you.
People might say to you - "Who knows your family?,… Without me you are nothing". You know what? They are small minded and scared of what you are going to become.
I will say to you now, be courageous and focused. It might not be easy, but with hard work, open heart and dedication your dreams shall be fulfilled.

Special thanks
This album would not have been possible without the Almighty God, and the support and effort of so many. Firstly, my gratitude to the musicians on this album. Special thanks to Olusola Bankole for producing and engineering the music. Olurotimi Okunade and Kayode Kuti for your encouragement, support and believing in me, and to Dotun Bankole for being an inspiration. Big thank you to Martin Zakharov for your help in organising the musicians at the beginning of Alariiya. To my band members, I thank you for all your support, for always being there and for all the extra time you've put in. I love you all.
